The Aphro Brand is Built on 3 Pillars...

Our Story

1. PRIDE

Aphro - Crafted with Tradition

The distillation of Palm wine is a time-honored tradition that creates a unique tasting spirit specific to West Africans. Conceived from the single trunk riveted palm tree.

For generations, West Africans have perfected the art of transforming fresh palm sap into a potent and flavourful spirit, a testament to our ingenuity and deep connection to our natural environment.

Distillation of palm wine involves a meticulous method that highlights the resourcefulness and craftsmanship of West African distillers. Using traditional techniques, the fermented sap is heated, and the vapor is collected and condensed to produce a clear, strong spirit. This process not only enhances the alcohol content but also concentrates the distinctive flavours derived from the palm sap.

2. PASSION

Discover the Spirit

Today, the distillation of palm wine continues to thrive, preserving a rich cultural heritage that is peculiar to us West Africans. Here at Aphro, we continue to embrace and adapt these age-old techniques, to ensure that this vibrant tradition remains alive, offering a taste of our history as African’s and spirit to the world.

Aphro Spirit’s birth is a holistic journey, born from an ancestral tradition, with a need to reclaim our heritage and refine an indigenous drink. Its spirit base locally known in Ghana as “Akpeteshie” (“Ogogoro” in Nigeria; “Sodabi” in Togo/ Benin, etc.) is produced through the age-old traditional Ghanaian distillation style which is then refined with a blend of indigenous African ingredients through a much modern triple distillation process that transports your palates on an aromatic journey through Africa.

3. POWER

Triple Distilled

During the era of the Gold Coast’s British rule, Akpeteshie became the Brit’s enemy. The Brits found Akpeteshie to be a threat. They knew their imported beverages could never rival home grown Akpeteshie. For this reason, it was banned. In 1957 when Ghana gained independence, they didn’t just reclaim the land, they reclaimed their heritage, and at the core of it, they reclaimed Akpeteshie.

History has not been kind to us as a people, and just like the “palm spirit, a drink once prohibited, we have passed through the mill of adversity and have been brewed to our finest state. Aphro is a constant reminder of our abilities, potential and capacity as a tribe.

The Aphro experience is a journey to greatness which is unique to each drinker. A tiring, arduous yet rewarding journey which can only be achieved with an intense desire, a burning eagerness, and an obsession to succeed. This is a feeling bottled up in Aphro yet discovered with taste. Through each sip, one can appreciate the dedication, knowledge, and cultural pride that go into its creation - a truly unapologetic African experience.
